The vineyard: is of our property and is situated in the Le Chiese “regional cru” of Pied- mont (listed as such since 2016) in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba. The vineyard is located on a hill facing North and with a splendid view to Mt. Monviso (the symbol of Paramount pictures and the highest peak of the province of Cuneo). The soil is predominantly light colored clay and limestone, some gray and blue tuff with sand under 10%.
The variety: Dolcetto is one of the popular red grape varieties in Piedmont. The "sweet" name is due to its early ripening as it becomes "dolce" faster than the other reds. The soil there is thin and poor so the vines produce few bunches with small and concentrated berries.
The wine: after several harvests we figured out that Le Chiese gives a very fruity but powerful Dolcetto with unusual aging potential (the UK Decanter magazine estimated it as 5 years). This concentrated wine with opulent wild berry aromas and excellent structure matches well many kinds of meat and pasta in red sauces.
The name: the hedgehog (“riccio” [rEE-choh]) is our symbol. «Ricciaia» ([ree-CHAH-yah]) initially means a pile of unpeeled chestnuts as they look like a group of hedgehogs.
