The vineyard: in 2013 we vinified for the first time our own Nebbiolo for Barolo. Not knowing the vineyards to the full extent, we gathered the grapes within 4 days, startig with Croera zone (9% of the final blend), then the cru Castagni (36%) and cru Ravera (45%) and we put them to ferment together. After the end of the fermentation the first blending was made with 5% each of the two cru, fermented separately (Bussia & Borzone);
The variety: The Nebbiolo is the king of the Langhe, the one with a world wide fame for producing wines to last and provide multiple pleasures with age. It’s our love and our passion, the variety that permits to «read and translate» the different terroirs of the Langhe better than the rest.
The wine: has been aged in botte & various tonneaux. The rigorous selection of the lots that made part fo the final belnd was performed under the guidance and with the help of our new consultant, the internationally acknowledged oenologist Franco Bernabei. The lots have been blended in June 2016 and the wine has been bottled a month later.
The name: „aculei” in Italian means „spines” - the small, sharp things that cover the hedgehog's body and defend him from his enemies. The hedgehog is our symbol.
The label: represents the hand drawn map of the Castagni vineyard that was acquired by La Biòca in 2013 and replanted for the most part, except for the small old plot from 1966 (the darkest one on the map), which makes part of the blends of all next «Aculei» vintages.
