The vineyard: the first one is in La Morra, planted in 1966 in Castagni MeGA, one of the highest points of the Barolo area (530 m a.s.l.) where the Nebbiolos tend to come out fresher and more elegant. The second is a younger one (~ 20 years old) in Verduno, San Lorenzo MeGA. The local Nebbiolos are known for their expressive floral notes. The grapes were picked with one day difference and vinified together, roughly 1/2 of the blend each one.
The variety: The Nebbiolo is the king of the Langhe, the one with a world wide fame for producing wines to last and provide multiple pleasures with age. It’s our love and our passion, the variety that permits to «read and translate» the different terroirs of the Langhe better than the rest.
The wine: was aged in big tonneaux from 4 different suppliers, each tonneau giving its own specific aromatic profile to the Nebbiolo. The lots were blended in September 2014 and the wine was bottled in March 2015.
The name: „aculei” in Italian means „spines” - the small, sharp things that cover the hedgehog's body and defend him from his enemies. The hedgehog is our symbol.
The label: represents the hand drawn map of the Castagni vineyard that was acquired by La Biòca in 2013 and replanted for the most part, except for the small old plot from 1966 (the darkest one on the map), which makes part of the blends of all next «Aculei» vintages.
